Three Reasons To Be A Christian

"For all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory"......"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Rom. 3:23 & 6:23).

There are three aspects of life that we must all deal with. They are the past, present and future. I will use these as my rationale for the three reasons to be a Christian.

Because of our sinful nature, we need the saving grace of Jesus. Our lives are spotted by what we have done in our past. None of our yesterdays, no matter how hard we try, can be relived. There simply are no "mulligans" in life. If you are not familiar with the term mulligan, in a social game of golf, a mulligan is a "do over." Those playing the game may agree beforehand to a certain number of mulligans allowed in their round. In the real rules of golf, there are no mulligans. We are responsible for past actions and can't go back for a "do over." What we have as Christians is freedom from the guilt of a sinful past. Through the grace of God, instead of guilt, we have forgiveness.

"Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom" (Jas. 4:13). The present is what we have! A great reason to be a Christian is the pure joy of life. When the earthquake opened the prison doors for Paul and Silas in Philippi, the jailor fell before them in fear. Paul and Silas gave them the words of life..."The jailor brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God---he and his whole family" (Acts 8:39). The joy of a Christian life well-lived is a reason to become a child of God. The "peace that passes all understanding" (Phil. 4:7) is another. That verse has come to be one of my favorites....Just let it roll off your tongue...."The peace that passes all understanding." It a peace found in the hearts of Christians. It is there because of the wonderful promises that our Lord makes to us. It is "our inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade----kept in heaven" (1 Pet. 1:4).

Heaven awaits the faithful Christian. It is our ultimate future. It is our promise and inheritance for a well-lived Christian life. When we bring Christian loved ones who have passed on into our memories, we think of the things they have done in our past. We glory in the knowledge that they are with the Lord!

"Sing to me of heaven, sing that song of peace, from the toils that bind me it will bring release;
Burdens will be lifted that are pressing so, Showers of great blessing o'er my heart will flow.
Sing to me of heaven let me fondly dream Of its golden glory, Of its pearly gleam;
Sing to me when shadows of the evening fall, Sing to me of heaven, Sweetest song of all."
