Church of Christ

A Teaching Religion

"For you have been born again, not out of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God" (1 Pet. 1:23).

I have an unabashed love of teaching. I think that I was vaccinated with some sort of teaching serum when I was young. I view Christianity as a teaching religion. As we reach out for God, which is what religion is, the desire to share our faith should always be there. Teaching, whether by word, deed or both is the way to share.

Today's verse talks about the "imperishable seed"," that being God's Word. Teaching always precedes conversion. As we look at the parable of the sower in Matthew 13, we find the "seed being sown." It is not magic seed and the one sowing is not a magic sower. Someone is sowing (teaching) the seed. (Word of God) New births in Christ are always preceded by teaching. If you take the time to read of the conversions to Christianity in the Book of Acts, none happen without some teaching of Jesus first. There is no "gospel fruit" found apart from teaching.

As Jesus departed from earth, He left us with a "commission." It is a commission to teach. "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, AND TEACHING THEM TO OBEY EVERYTHING I HAVE COMMANDED YOU! "All nations" makes Christianity a religion for all people. Children are especially wonderful candidates for teaching.

The church is a teaching institution, and a great one at that. Paul wrote to Timothy about the "church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth" (1: 3:15). As the churches of Asia were addressed in the Book of Revelation, they were referred to as "candlesticks." The writer of the Book of Hebrews said "by this time you ought to be teachers" (5:12). We just can't get around it! All of us as Christians ought to be teachers. Some are able to verbalize their commitment to their beliefs through their study of God's Word. Some are able to take what they learn and teach through their example. The blessed teachers are those that can do both. It is what all of us should be striving toward.

Have a wonderful beginning to your week....Let your light shine for Him (its teaching).....Love mark Phil. 4:11
