Affecting Each Other

"And it will be: Like people, like priests" (Hosea 4:9).

Can you think of some people who have had an effect on you life. Just for the sake of getting the thought processes working, parents don't count. Think of some of the people that have affected you in a positive manner. Is there anyone out there that you consider to have been your mentor? We just can't get around it...People influence other people. Today's verse is about priests in Israel who did not follow God's instructions. Because of them, the people were affected in a negative way. Good and bad kings also had an effect on the people. Solomon was influenced by foreign wives to do evil things.

God wants us to have a good influence on others. "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold" (Prov. 22:1). As His disciples, Jesus has referred to us as light and salt (Matt. 5: 13-16). Both light and salt have powers to affect other things in a good way. Jesus expects us to have a good affect on those around us.

So....How can we have the type of influence that the Lord wants us to have. I believe that it starts with integrity. Our yeses must be yeses and our noes must be noes. We need to be practitioners of what we preach. The absolute worst way to influence someone is by saying one thing and doing another. We must stand for what we believe and be principled, so that others will not lose respect for our sincerity. Paul used the example of eating food sacrificed to idols when he made this important statement. "When you sin against your brother in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so I will not cause him to fall" (1 Cor. 8: 12 & 13). Having the true servant mentality will have a good influence on those around us. When we serve for all the right reasons, people cannot help but be affected in a positive way.

A final thought. Some of those who influenced us are no longer alive, but their influence still lives. "Yes," says the spirit, "they will rest from their labors, for their deeds will follow them" (Rev. 14:13). Our good influence will live on after us and affect others.

Have a wonderful day....Make a difference.....Love mark Phil. 4:11
