About The Light We Are

"So that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent children of God above reproach in a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world" (Phil. 2:15).

There is a lot to be said about a good light source. Have you ever been stuck out somewhere at night in need of a good flashlight, only to find one with weak batteries? It happened to me out in the bay just last week. Do you have those trusty candles ready in case the electricity in your home goes out? Whether we are home, in our cars or out camping, good light sources are just plain important.

In today's verse, Paul tells the Philippians, that as Christians they appear "as lights in the world." He indicates that the world needs the kind of light that they can produce. Of course Paul is just echoing the words of Jesus in Matthew 5. Jesus told us before Paul came on the scene that, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a candle and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all that are in the house" (14 & 15). I guess the question of the day is; what kind of lights are we? Have you ever tried to read by candle light? I love candles for their ambiance, but I have been spoiled by better light sources to read and not stumble around in the dark.

Kerosene and oil lamps are kind of neat. But they run out of fuel and we have to clean the globes because they don't burn in a very clean manner. We do love our electricity don't we...Whether incandescent, fluorescent, or those new low resistance bulbs, they are the best source of light that we use. They work however, only when in contact with the source of power.

If Jesus and His apostle Paul are right, the light we shed to the world is very important. It can't be flickering like a candle or in need of constant cleaning like a kerosene or oil lamp. It cannot be hidden under a bushel because it needs to "give light to all that are in the house." The most important aspect of our shining lights however is their contact with the power source. The only way our lights can shine the way Jesus wants them to, is if they are in constant contact with Him. In His Word and in our prayers is the way to maintain that contact. Lets keep shining!!!

"This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine,
let it shine, let it shine"
