The Kind Of Person I Ought To Be

"What sort of people ought you be in holy conduct and godliness" (2 Pet. 3:11)?

Do you remember people asking you when you were a child, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" (I think I've been asked that recently.....) Its kind of a innocent question that's been asked of children for as long I can remember. Perhaps a question with more meaning to it might be, "What kind of person do you want to be?"

Peter asks this very question, but in a rhetorical way in today's verse. Within the context of the chapter, Peter is writing about the second coming of Jesus. He tells his audience "what sort of people they ought to be in holy conduct and godliness" in light of Jesus return. Lets see if the quality of person that Peter is trying to encapsulate here is the one that we ought to be. In verses one and two it says that we ought to "remember the words spoken by the prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles." I like that....Good advice...But he is not nearly finished. He writes in the next four verses that "scoffers will come," that are ignorant of His Word. There will be those that will try to ridicule our beliefs so we must be strong and knowledgeable.

The way to do that is found in verse seven, by being in the Word. Peter then gives us the old "God is God and I'm not." "To God a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day." God wants all of us to be Christians and come under His protective wing. Peter goes on to tell that we ought to be looking toward the "new heavens and new earth in which righteousness dwells." He wraps it up in a neat package by telling us that if we are indeed looking for these things, that we should "be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless"......."to be on our guard, and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

With our goals firmly in place, this is how we ought to be as we await His return.

Have a great day...RAK someone today... Love mark Phil. 4:11
