Unity of Spirit - Bond Of Peace

"Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace" (Eph. 4:3).

It looks like in today's verse that Paul ties unity and peace together in a very neat package. He implores the church at Ephesus, a church he had spent three years with, to "live a life worthy of the calling you have received" (V 1). He then says, "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love" (V 2). Paul wanted them, and wants us as Christians, to live and work together in unity and grow together in maturity. Now this is pretty heady stuff...It is lovely advice, but he does not leave us out on an island, but gives us some more solid material to help us reach this unity.

There are a lot of people out there writing "self-help" books. Lots and lots of talk and theatrics, when I think that the best advice follows the maxim of keeping it "short and to the point." Verses 4 to 6 of this chapter do just that..."There is one Body and one Spirit----just as you were called to one hope when you were called----one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."

This ought to be the platform on which the Christian stands. It is the way to understand that the unity is not to be disturbed. This one hope that we share is surely multi-faceted, but is based on this simple premise. Jesus is our Lord and Savior! The unity which Paul so greatly desires in these passages is laid out for us. We have hope because there is; one God, one Lord, one Spirit, one Body, one Faith and one Baptism. As Christians we not only share these things, but must embrace them to have true unity and peace. At the risk of being redundant, we have the hope because of what has been done for us by the one God, one Lord and one Spirit, and because of what we have done for ourselves by embracing the one faith, by obeying the one baptism, and being added to the one body.

This is the unity of spirit and bond of peace on which the Christian stands...

Have a wonderful week..Always let your light shine for Him....Love mark Phil. 4:11
