Is there Something Missing?

"What do I still lack" (Matt. 19:20)?

Lets play a little game of "fill in the blank." If I only had _____________, then I would be happy....Is there always something missing? In today's verse we have a question asked of Jesus by a young man. His first question (V 16) was, "What good thing must I do to get eternal life?" Jesus responded by telling him that he needed to obey the commandments, and listed some of them. The young man was pleased because he had always obeyed these, hence the question, "What do I still lack." We have a Savior who knows our hearts, and Jesus knew the young man's. "Go sell your possessions and give them to the poor, and then you will have treasure in heaven" (V 21). BINGO!!!!! The young man answered his own question..He went away sad because "he had great wealth."

So....What is it that someone can lack that will keep him from the kingdom? The Book of James provides some insight. "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at one point is guilty of breaking all of it" (2:10). One's obedience must be a constant thing...It needs to be continual. "All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm until the end will be saved" (Matt. 10:22)...The apostle Paul put it this way; "Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain" (1 Cor. 15:58). Just like the Jews were to bring there best and unspotted animals for sacrifice, Jesus wants our best...He wants our all.

He wants us to feel guilt when we do wrong and repent.(1 Jno 1:8)...He wants our whole-hearted service, and not just lip-service. He wants us to know (the rich young man did not) that our true treasure lies in Him. He wants to be first in our lives and requires self denial on our part.

The story of the rich young man makes me sad in some ways. I always see him leaving Jesus, not understanding where the real treasure was. His heart was just on another treasure... For us today the lesson is clear. Jesus laid everything on the line for us. He expects us to give our all to Him...

Have a wonderful day..Let your light shine for Him..... Love mark Phil. 4:11
