Church of Christ

A Day To Day Religion

"Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me' " (Matt. 16:24).

There are many cliches in sports. One of them is repeated ad nauseam by both players and coaches. It goes something like this; "We have to take each game one at a time." Self-help groups use the adage of "one day at a time." Not to let them get the jump on me, our Christian lives should be led on many levels according to this principle. There are certain things that we must do daily for our lives to have meaning, both to us and to the Lord. I would like to look at a few of these things today.

The cross is a symbol of duty. To take it one step farther, a daily duty. We have seen how it works in other areas, the one day at a time thing is speaking about perseverance. In our daily walk, denial of self and the putting on of Christ is something that we must adhere to on a daily basis. There can be no successful endeavor without this perseverance, especially when it comes to matters of the soul. Next on my list is our daily bread. The blessed man of the 1st Psalm "meditated on the law day and night." The famous Bereans were said to be of a "more noble character" because they "examined the scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true" (Acts 17:11). Our souls require daily food...We must feed ourselves on the Word of God.

In the "model prayer" of Matthew 6, we find a request that we should make to God for our "daily bread." Each day we are mindful that our needs for that day must be met. Since our we have these daily needs, we need to pray for them. Since we stand in need of God's daily blessings, we must pray for them. A robust prayer life should be a part of our daily religion. In the church at Jerusalem of the first century, we find in Acts 6 that some of the needy widows who could not support themselves we being neglected. Seven men from within the church were chosen to see that their daily needs were met. A part of our day to day religion is seeing that those less fortunate are cared for. It is a part of our Christian service and needs to be thought of each day.

"Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ" (Acts 5:42). A part of our day to day religion should be dedicated to our study and teaching of others about the good news. When Jesus left the earth, he put this responsibility in our hands. Finally, "But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today" (Heb. 3:13). Everyone needs encouragement at one time or another. It ought to be a part of our day to day religion to encourage others and lift them up. Remember.... Take it one game at a time....

Have a great beginning to your week...Go about doing good... Love mark Phil. 4:11
