What Are We Worth?

"What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor" (Psa. 8:4-5).

Many years ago I was told that if the human body were totally decomposed, the value of its elements would be a little over one dollar. In today's market, that figure has gone up to about $4.50. By any standard, that's not very much. A man's value lies not in the elements of which it is composed, and not even the much greater value placed on its functioning parts. To me, a question that I might ask is, "What am I worth in the eyes of God?"

So...How much am I worth in God's eyes? Perhaps my favorite teaching of Jesus is the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The Father tells us how much that one of his sons is worth in this teaching. Even though the son did wrong and did not live up to the Father's expectations, when he came to his senses, his dad welcomed him home. This parable should tell us a lot about how we are viewed in the Father's eyes. Jesus tells us that we are much more valuable than "many sparrows" (Matt.10:31) or a "sheep" (Matt. 12:12). We were created to be of great worth both to Him and to our fellow man.

Are we valuable just because we "are"? I think that we are of great worth when we are His servants. We are worth a lot when we care for Jesus by meeting the needs of "the least" in His kingdom. We are valuable when he is able to accomplish much through us. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13). We are his vehicles for doing good in the world. The apostle Paul said this; "Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me" (2 Cor. 12:9). "Humble yourselves therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time" (1 Pet. 5:6). As we humble ourselves, God lets us know how much we are really worth to Him..."He will lift us up."

That's a lot more than $4.50! More about our worth next time...

Have a wonderful day...Go about doing good...Love mark Phil. 4:11
