Spirit Week

"We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him" (Acts 5:32).

As a player/teacher/ coach/announcer, I have spent a lot of times in hot gymnasiums during the winter months involved with basketball. I always enjoyed good clean "school spirit", with students cheering for their classmates. One of the cheers that I always enjoyed was when one side would chant, "We've got spirit, yes we do, we've got spirit, how about you?" Predictably, the other side would return the favor, trying to be louder and it would go back and forth across the gym. It was rollicking good stuff...

School spirit works in students to engender a pride in who and what they are. I may be stretching the point, but the Holy Spirit works in us to make us proud of who and what we are also. I have seen kids with school spirit work for countless hours decorating the hallways of their school or working on a homecoming float. The Holy Spirit should likewise move us to be the best Christians that we can be, spending much time in service to the Lord. I don't know exactly why some students had this school spirit and some didn't, but I do know about how we get the Holy Spirit. Today's verse tells us. It is given to "those who obey."

Peter proclaimed, "Repent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). It is through the Spirit that we are "sons." Paul tells us that "God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit that calls out abba Father (Gal. 4:6). Through the Spirit we get to come into a more intimate relationship with God through Jesus his Son. That's what abba means. It is like calling our earthy father, dad. Father just means father, but dad connotes a more intimate feeling.

Paul also lets us know about how the Spirit can control our lives. "You, however, are not controlled by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you" (Rom. 8:9). The Spirit is given to those who obey so that we may always be reminded of the power of Christ in our lives. We are strengthened with a power that we could not possibly attain, and are guided by a light that there would not be, without the Spirit inside of us. I think that I will write some more about the Holy Spirit in the next few devotionals. I leave you with this thought..."I've got Spirit, yes I do, I've got Spirit, how about you?"

Have a great day...Let your light shine for Him... Love mark Phil. 4:11
