Be Like Mike

"Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did" (1 John 2:6).

In 1991, trying to take advantage of the immense popularity of Michael Jordan, Gatorade launched an advertising campaign based on the slogan, "be like Mike." Needless to say it went over very well and the slogan became almost a mantra. We see the implication that if a great athlete like Michael Jordan drank Gatorade for thirst and fluid replacement, shouldn't you? We have heard so much talk about role models, whether out in the world or within the church, that we may lose sight of ours. The apostle John said, "whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did." This speaks about our Christian walk. If we are to be the best Christian that we can be, it needs to be about walking in His footsteps....Walking His walk..

The apostle Paul said this about our Christian growth. "Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ" (Eph. 4:13). We are to try our very best to grow to be more Christ-like each day. Jesus has set the bar quite high so we must not be disappointed if our growth is slow. As long as we see our self improving in the way that we conduct our life, we are moving in the right direction.

In trying to be like Jesus there is something else to look at. Paul put it this way; "Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus" (Phil. 2:5). To me this says that we are to have the "mind of Christ." The four gospels are narratives of Jesus' life. We get quite an accurate glimpse of His mind as we read them. We see how kind and compassionate He was. We get an insight into the relationship that He had with God, his Father. His parables like the Prodigal Son, tell us of God's love for His children. The Good Samaritan tells us who our "neighbor" is and how we ought to treat Him.

The only person in life that we can truly improve is our self. The only way to measure that improvement is by the great example that Jesus set for us. In the next few days I would like to take a look at what Jesus was like that we should want to walk like Him, grow into Him and have His mind....

Have a great day...Make a difference... Love mark Phil. 4:11
