Admirable Traits

"And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient to death---even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him a name that is above every name" (Phil.2: 8 & 9).

Isn't it interesting how we let people into our lives. As a teacher, I let in over 150 each year. It began as I knew literally nothing about them, and evolved as I came to learn more and more about them. Meeting people for the first time and trying to befriend them is a giant leap of blind faith. Letting Jesus in is not such a leap. All that we have to do is read our Bibles and we can find out everything we need to know about Him. All of the admirable traits that we want to engender in our lives are found in His. This is why Jesus is who we ought to try to be like.

When Jesus invites us to come after Him as we are "weary and burdened," He gives us a self-description. "For I am gentle and humble of heart" (Matt. 11:29). Today's verse describes this gentleness and humility. Though He was the very nature of God, "He made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant" (V 7). He had it all and gave it up to become a servant. With this servant attitude He went from village to village. He not only taught the good news but healed the sick and had compassion on those who were harassed and helpless. When He saw human needs, He met them. When Peter taught people about Jesus in Acts 10, he described the Lord as one "who went around doing good" (V 38).

Finally....Some traits can be reached for and not attained. In reaching however, we make ourselves better. "For we do not have a high priest who is not able to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way, just as we are----yet was without sin" (Heb. 4:15). As a man, Jesus did not just stroll through life without temptations before Him. I am sure He was tempted in ways not even recorded in our Bibles. As we try to become more Christ-like in our lives, it is important to remember that we will have help in resisting the temptations set before us. After all, we are trying to be like Jesus and assume His admirable traits.

Have a great day...Let your light shine for Him... Love mark Phil.4:11
