Know, Say, And Do

"So that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe" (Phil. 2:15).

The apostle Paul is certainly not the first one to speak about lights when talking about being good. "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your lights shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven" (Matt.5: 14-16). These are the wonderful words of Jesus admonishing us to be lights in the world. Jesus himself is called the light...He is the light and if we want to be Christ-like in our lives we must also be the light.

Back to the book of Philippians. As previously stated, Paul really liked this church. As Jesus urges us to be the light of the world because He loves us, Paul urges the Philippians in the same way. The cool thing here is that Paul gives the instructions on how to be really good lights. Knowing that they were living in "a crooked and depraved generation," being the "shining stars of the universe" would not be easy. In order to be the stars there were three pre-requisites.

"Do everything without complaining or arguing." In other words, be careful of the things that you say. When words sneak out, whether carelessly or in anger, they can cut like a knife. Although the wound may heal, the scar may last for a long time. Think of all the times that we may lose our ability to be lights in witnessing to the world, because of careless talk. Next...."So that you may become blameless and pure." This is speaking to our actions or deeds. If our actions and deeds are not what they should be, we again lose an opportunity to be a witness for our Lord. If our actions are not Godly, those about us will not see God in us.

Finally, "as you hold out the word of life." Our words and deeds ought to be regulated by what we know. What we know comes from enmeshing ourselves in His Word. By staying in the word of life, and taking care to watch what they said and did, the church at Philippi had a great opportunity to shine as stars in a dark universe. You and I have that same chance today to shine in our world.

Have a great day...Go about doing good... Love mark Phil. 4:11
