Real Sharing

"Yet is was good of you to share in my troubles" (Phil. 4: 14).

Lets take a trip down memory lane. You are a kid again and have had the good fortune of coming into enough money to buy a candy bar. Your best friend is with you as you unwrap it and break it in half. You can't resist to check if the bar has been broken into two even pieces and of course, it hasn't. So....Which one of you gets the bigger piece? At this point we learn a lesson in sharing. It has been a tradition at the Northfield church to do some sharing at Thanksgiving time. We ask our members to identify a family they know who has needs and we supply their Thanksgiving dinner. Sometimes it has been more than one family. What a warm feeling we get when we bring in the turkey and all the trimmings of the season to a family that has fallen on hard times. "In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive'" (Acts 20:25).

The Philippian church to whom the apostle Paul was writing, was a sharing church. When Paul had needs, "not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only" (V 15). If you read down through the nineteenth verse, you will get a real picture of this church's total dedication to sharing what they had with Paul. I get the overwhelming feeling from the flavor of these verses that this church "got it" when it came to sharing.

Maybe nothing says "I really love you," than the actions we take to meet someone's needs. Is there a better way to show our Christian love? In times of need, our true colors are shown as we have the unique opportunity to show the love of God to others. Paul writes here that he knew times of plenty and times of need. He attributes the aid given to him by this church as their generosity in the Lord. As we look at the lessons from this great epistle and give them careful consideration, it would be wise to think of the ways we can show God's love through our desire to share.

By the way, did you give your friend the bigger piece of candy?

Have a wonderful beginning to your week. It would be a great day for a RAK... Love mark Phil. 4:11
