Godly Fruit

"Remain in me and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me" (John 15:4).

My 92 year old father-in-law has spent most of his life as a farmer....A fruit bearer...Most of us have grown things in our lives, whether in a garden or having plants in our homes. The nuances involved in being a successful farmer however, go way beyond this. The first five verses of the fifteenth chapter of John tell us all about fruit bearing. Just as a plant is considered of little use if it does not bear fruit, believers are to be fruit bearers. In the New Testament, the figure of "good fruit" represents the qualities of a Godly life. These virtues and characteristics are dotted though out our Bibles, culminating in Galatians 5:22 & 23. Lets look at some of the virtues that we are to embody as Christians. The apostle Paul writes; "For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness" (Eph. 5: 8-11). Our God is pleased with us when we live a life "in the light." It is walking in the light that helps us to produce the fruits of a Godly life. In some ways, in this view, we may be more like plants than animals in our fruitfulness. If you shake off the cobwebs, do you remember this simple formula? 6 CO 2 + 6 H20 (light) > C6 H12 06 + 6 0 2....If memory serves me correctly it is photosynthesis in green plants, the very food making process that keeps our planet functioning. As we abide in the light of our Savior Jesus Christ, the food we produce is goodness, holiness and righteousness.

Back to John 15....The big secret to bearing fruit is let out of the bag here. The key word is "abide." (NIV says "remain") If we remain in Him, and He remains in us, we will be fruit bearers. It is what gives us the power we need. It is what provides the light and nutrients to carry on the way we should. It comes full circle as Paul says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13). It only happens when we are connected by the vine to God. More about this tomorrow...

Have a great day....Let your light shine for Him.... Love mark Phil. 4;11
