More Good Fruit

"What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear...
Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? "

Joseph M. Scriven 1855

I have again used an old song from our hymn books instead of a scripture today to continue some thoughts about bearing fruit. If the way to bear fruit is to abide in the vine, (Jesus) just how do we make sure that we are connected to that vine? Jesus gives us the answer in John 15, and it is why I used the words from this old hymn. "If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love...My command is this; 'Love one another as I have loved you'....You are my friends if you do what I command" (Vs 10, 12, 14). We are able to stay in Jesus the vine and bear fruit by obeying all that He commands. In our obedience, Jesus becomes and remains our friend. You may be thinking that we don't like having our friends on earth barking commands at us about obeying them. This is no earthly friend however, and His words MUST be obeyed if we are to reap the benefits.

"Those who obey His commands live in Him, and He in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us; We know it by the Spirit He gave us" (1 John 3:24). We have the assurance that we abide in Him as we obey His commands...There are myriads of "self-help" books out there. I'm not saying that there is no benefit for us in some of them, but with Jesus as our friend we have the watershed of all of those books ever written. He not only wants us to obey Him, but he set the bar for us. All that He did while on the earth, including His death, was in obedience to the Father. Over and over again He explained that what He did and said were all about the "will of the Father." "My food is to do the will of Him who sent me" (John 4:34). "For I seek not to please myself but Him who sent me" (John 5:31). Jesus set the example for us in doing His Father's will so that we should do His.

This is how we ought to conduct ourselves at all times. All that we say and do is to please Jesus...We want Him as our friend. He is the way to being productive, fruit bearing people. "What a friend we have in Jesus....Can we find a friend so faithful?" We can maintain this friendship only through our obedience to Him. Only through this friendship can be all that we are to be...

Have a great day...Go about doing good... Love mark Phil. 4:11
