Being Different Is Okay

"The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached....Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ" (Phil.1:18 & 27).

Simply put, we are all different. There have probably been some times in your life that someone has told you this in an unflattering way. I think that God is OK with our differences. Not everyone everyone on the football team can be the quarterback, but all are important in trying to win. There are so many things to be accomplished for a church to function, that people with diverse talents are needed. So...Where does this diversity become a detriment rather than a blessing. There is a force at work within the body of Jesus that is strong enough to keep us working in harmony despite our differences. That force is the goal for which we are striving. In all ways we are seeking to glorify our God. It has always been man's highest purpose. "You were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your body" (1 Cor. 6:20).

When we conduct our lives in such a way as to do everything to His Glory, our differences quickly fall by the wayside. Jesus told us himself that part of His purpose was to bring glory to the Father. The apostle Paul understood completely. When he wrote "to live is Christ, to die is gain", it was laid out for us. If we live our lives the way that God wants us to, He is glorified . When we die having lived Godly lives, He is glorified. In our obedience, our goal is not self-centered but God-centered. Just as Jesus did all of His work to glorify the Father, so are we to allow our lights to shine in such away as to bring glory to God.

Finally, although we are each different in some way, there is another goal to which we ought to aspire. "This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples" (John 15:8). As His children, this is another part of our responsibility. Despite our differences, as the glorification of our Lord is paramount, we will bear much fruit for Him. Life would be so boring if we were all exactly alike. Lets use our differences to make a difference for Him...
