375 Quarts of Strawberries

"And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.....Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it" (Luke 14: 27 & 28).

When I was eleven years old and a budding Little League Baseball star, I decided that I needed a really good glove. That glove was on the shelf at Rice's hardware store with a price tag of $29.95. (not many sporting goods stores back then)..That spring my mom took me to pick strawberries at one of the local farms. The going rate was eight cents per quart, hence my title. Back-breaking work picking strawberries, but I knew the cost of that baseball glove that I wanted so much....

Back in Jesus' day, many people were attracted to Him. His teachings were magnificent, not to mention the miracles. The people were mesmerized by Him. That is not what Jesus wanted however. He wanted commitment and He challenged them to consider their level of it. Jesus wanted them to know that there was cross-bearing involved ..There were costs to be considered. He goes on to say in Luke 14; "For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him saying, 'this fellow began to build and was not able to finish' " (Vs 29 & 30).

Jesus challenged them and us. The challenge is to make a deliberate commitment to put God above all else regardless of the cost. The cool thing??? Though the commitment He expects from us is great, the reward is even greater! We have the promise of God's help through our lives. "I will never leave you; never will I forsake you" (Heb. 13:5). I am sure that all of you can think and write back to me of the times when God was with you through a dark time. Despite hardships in his life, the apostle Paul was able to stay focused and committed. He wrote; "that he who began a good work in you will carry it on until completion until the day of Jesus Christ" (Phil. 1:6). When we find what we want, there is no turning back and no wavering. Our God offers us a future so glorious that the challenges and trials we face are miniscule by comparison.

By the way, that baseball glove was worth every one of those 375 quarts of strawberries....The cost was great but the reward was greater! Have a wonderful day...

It would be a fantastic day for a RAK.....Love mark Phil. 4:11
