Engaging The Clutch

"For where two or three come together in my name, there I am with them" (Matt. 18: 20).

I have always like to drive cars with a "standard" transmission....You know, the "stick-shift." All three of our kids learned to drive on a stick-shift. The hardest part is getting the rhythm between the clutch and accelerator pedals. To operate it, the clutch must be engaged. Jesus has promised to be there when we gather together in His name, but it is our job to "engage" Him. Through prayer, Bible lesson, Lord's Supper and giving, we make that engagement. Through the warmth that we share with those who are there for the same reason, we become engaged. "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:35). When we love one another as we should we become engaged.

Jesus is there when we gather together and we need to act like it for our sake, other members and our guests. We become engaged when we are mindful of those who are present with us. These people are just like us...They are people that appreciate the presence and encouragement of other Christians. Those that are visiting, our guests, will learn a lot about us by our demeanor toward others and the Lord. If they see the love that we have for one another, they will know that "we are His disciples." Sometimes we can't get to the assembly as early as we would like. If this is the case. make up the time on the other end and don't be the earliest to leave. Take some time to get engaged with those who are present.

Finally, worship service is a participatory activity, not a "spectator sport." Get engaged with as many of your senses as possible. Let your eyes and ears involve you in the worship. Lets engage ourselves in the lesson, singing, praying, giving and Lord's Supper. (amens ARE permitted)....The blessings of the worship come to those who are truly engaged in the service. Slap me around if I am wrong, but if we come away from worship unfulfilled, perhaps we just didn't get engaged on a deep enough level. When I taught my children to drive, there was a lot of "bucking and stalling" going on. Once they learned to engage the clutch properly, it was smooth sailing...

Have a great day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil. 4:11
