Church of Christ

A Place To Belong

"Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others" (Rom. 12: 4 & 5).

During my sermon yesterday morning, after running off a list of superlatives about why we have hope in our Lord, I exclaimed, "But that's not all!" It reminded a lot of us of the early morning "pitchmen" on TV. You know the ones I'm talking about, don't you? The exercise machine that will get you "ripped" in six weeks or maybe the miracle tool ($19.95) that will replace every other one in your toolbox. (If only my mechanic knew about that one, he wouldn't have spent thousands of dollars on all of his) Perhaps its the one about those fantastic knives...The ones that are the best you will ever own, to which a different knife is added every 30 seconds or so...Most of us get skeptical when we hear these audacious claims that are made, but admit it....The thought intrigues us, doesn't it...

What I would like to share today are some bigger than life claims that are true. Not "one size fits all", or "the last one you'll ever buy", but even better. It is a promise of an all-sufficient Savior who died to form a perfect institution...the church. God makes claims about it that are indeed bigger than life...Claims that can be believed. One of our greatest needs as humans is to be needed. Today's verse tells us that we are. We have a place in the church where our personal contributions are needed and appreciated. A place where we have a sense of ownership and are honored as a member. I don't watch many of the sitcoms on TV today, but when I was a kid they were all about family. Everyone in the family group had a place and were loved. Even when they made mistakes and suffered a consequence, they were brought back into the family fold. Viewers love that stuff because they want to belong.

The church gives all of us an opportunity to bring something to the table for the common good. The apostle Paul tells us that we are either arms, legs, feet, eyes, ears or hands. The body works at it's optimum when all the parts are functioning together. We need people to pick up others for services. We need people to teach classes and change the sign. Someone is needed to take care of the finances and others know what to do when the hot water heater expires. "We have different gifts" (V 6). We ALL have something to offer...a job...a skill...a part to play. There's no; "too young", too old", "too inexperienced"....Remember Moses claim that he didn't speak very well? (Ex. 4:10) Was God able to use him anyway? Our challenge is to find the thing(s) we do well, and do them. It is great to belong...It is wonderful to be needed...

Have a great day...It would be a good day for a RAK... Love mark phil. 4:11
