Virtue - Part II

"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue (2 Peter 1:5).

I do very much enjoy this list of virtues that the apostle Peter writes down for us in this epistle. I have heard of them being called graces as well. Whatever we choose to call them, if we strive to attain them, we should achieve a well-rounded Christian life. (see also Gal. 5:22 & 23)....If we have the great faith that we ought to, Peter tells us to add virtue to it. He tells us to strive for excellence and "moral perfection." As we begin with our foundation of faith, or our confidence and trust in God, we need to add the desire (virtue) to excel and be strong in that faith. So, virtue is taking our faith-based relationship with God to the next level, using this trait to grow in the knowledge of our Lord...If we are striving for virtue, it will be evident to those around us.

I ask you the question; If we fail in our attainment of virtue, what happens to our faith? It will just wither and die! When it is joined to our faith however, something wonderful happens. Our faith becomes more powerful, and our lives more dynamic. Our service to the Lord will grow exponentially because we now have two extremely vital forces combined. They will constrain us to abound in His good work and make great efforts to improve even more.

"Be perfect therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matt. 5:48). Jesus taught His disciples (and us) to strive for perfection. The apostle Paul reinforced this teaching by writing, "We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ" (Col.1: 28). Paul considered the virtue of his disciples as a linchpin to his ministry and teachings, and encourages us to "purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit" (2 Cor. 7:1). The gauntlet has been thrown down....The challenge is there...We must add to our faith, virtue.....

Have a great beginning to your week...Start it out with a RAK or two.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
