Virtue III


"Not that I have already obtained all this.....but I press on to take hold of that which Christ took hold of for me....I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it....forgetting what is behind, and straining for what is ahead....I press on toward the goal (Phil. 3:12-14).

The good runners in a distance race have a window of opportunity into which to make a decision of commitment. It is that time when they will make an all out effort to get to the finish line first. In this moment they must embrace the philosophy of Phil. 3:12-14...Preparation has been made, the goal is ahead, now the effort must be made to focus on goal....Get there as fast as we can!

In the spiritual life as we seek be a person of virtue, an amount of preparation must be made. We must make a commitment to this excellence. We want to be like the tree of the first Psalm that is "planted by the streams of water"...making our "delight in the law of the Lord, and meditating on it night and day." Growing in virtue does not come by accident, but by dwelling on those things that are virtuous. "Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable----if anything is excellent or praiseworthy---think about such things" (Phil. 4:8). When we allow our thoughts to be pure ones, we are on the road to being virtuous people. We can never be satisfied with the "status quo," or even in our present spiritual condition. Paul said it in today's verse. "I haven't obtained it or been made perfect."....."I haven't taken hold of it yet."

We must admit that there is always room to grow. Then we need to be like the miler. Its the goal!!! I can't allow my past mistakes to hinder me. I also can't allow my past successes to keep me from improving. Reaching forward, Paul says. Look ahead with the optimism of a winner. Virtue can be a part of our makeup if we are willing to work for it...
