And The Answer Is...

"For this reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge" (2 Pet. 1:5).

If someone is good at Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit, does this mean that they possess a lot of knowledge? Are the PhDs of the world the people with the greatest amount of knowledge. I'm not sure that I am ready to answer those questions, but I know that this section of Second Peter is dealing with us as Christians needing to increase in knowledge. I find it especially interesting that the third "grace or virtue" mentioned in moving toward this knowledge, is knowledge. Thus, if we are to truly grow "through our knowledge of Him," Knowledge is one of the eight key elements. Redundant? I don't think so and I'm going to try to convey why.

If we had a Greek dictionary in front of us we would find that the word used for knowledge in verse 3, ( "through the knowledge of Him") is different than the one in the list of eight virtues of verse 5. Is this weird? Not really. The word knowledge used in verses 2, 3 and 8 connotes this. "To become thoroughly acquainted with, to know thoroughly, to know accurately or to know well." This complete and thorough knowledge of the Lord comes only when we are able to demonstrate all eight of the virtues mentioned in verses 5-7. I hope that I have not confused you, I'll try to clear it up.

As we look at today's verse, "now add to your virtue, knowledge," we are looking at a slightly different take on the word knowledge. This word is translated as we would normally understand the word...Knowledge; awareness through study or experience, seeking to know, an inquiry or investigation. So let me get this straight. Peter says that we need to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. This is a very special kind of knowledge attained only by those who are diligently seeking Him. In order to gain this knowledge, we must add to our faith, virtue, and to our virtue, knowledge. This knowledge is all about understanding the will of God and the way to salvation through Jesus. It is a knowledge that we are to constantly and actively seek if we are to truly know Him...More about knowledge tomorrow...

Have a wonderful day...Make a difference... Love mark Phil. 4:11
