The Right Things For The Right Reasons

"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness" (2 Peter 1:5 & 6).

My mom was convinced that my older brother survived a traffic accident because of how well she fed him as a child. When the doctor said something about his "strong bones," this sealed the deal. When the apostle Peter finishes his second epistle, he does so with these words: "But grow in the grace a knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ" (3:18). As we have seen thus far, the path to developing this Christ-like character is through our maturation in the "graces" that Peter lists in the first chapter. Today's verses brings us through faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control and perseverance. To develop the "strong bones" of a mature Christian, godliness is added to the mix. As we have seen thus far, each one of these graces has modified the previous one. Perseverance took our self-control to its next logical level of being consistent in our ability to make the right choices. Right choices over and over.

Godliness makes sense out of perseverance. If we are to persevere through the good and bad times, what trait should we be seeking to exemplify? How about being as Christ-like as we can? Godliness is all about being devout in what we believe. It is trying as hard as we can to please Him in our words and actions. In the military, good conduct medals are among the most prestigious one can receive. Godliness is our good conduct medal from God for our actions done to so that we are becoming to Him! Done because we love Him and want to be like Him. True godliness is the desire to be seen and approved by God and not by man...A devotion to His will, so that our actions are right and just. The correct reason to persevere is out of an unyielding desire to please not man....not ourselves....BUT GOD! This is Godliness.... More next time...

Have a great day...Let your light shine for Him.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
