The Compund Of Life

"For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating or drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Rom 14: 17).

Lets see now...If my basic chemistry is correct, the compound water (H2 0) is a simple chemical combination of the elements oxygen (O) and hydrogen (H). The combination for the compound glucose (C6 H12 O6) is a bit more complicated, with carbon, hydrogen and oxygen being the elements involved. For you chemistry novices, you might notice that hydrogen and oxygen are in both compounds and also in the same proportion. According to today's verse, peace is a basic element in the kingdom of God. If you remember the fruits of the spirit, (Galatians 5:22 & 23) you know that peace is also one of the elements. The word peace has a great ring to it doesn't it. If we say the word and close our eyes in visualization, we might see a scene of tranquility and harmony....A place where there is no stress or anxiety...No hostilities...It is an element that is sorely needed in the complex compound that is our life.

Peace is an element that is badly needed in all aspects of life. It is needed in the world, our churches and in our personal lives. When stress, anxiety, grief or despair come into our lives, we long for peace. Even Christians who are dedicated at the highest levels find themselves in need of this basic element. Whenever I find myself in need of a "peace fix," I turn to the book of Philippians. "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be known by all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." True peace is found in God and God alone and without the peace He provides, no real peace is possible.

More on this tomorrow...I will leave you with this peaceful verse. "The God of peace be with you all. Amen. (Rom. 15:33).
