The ROYGBIV of Love

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" (1 Cor. 13:4-7).

Do you remember ROYGBIV? It is the mnemonic we all learned for the 7 colors of the visible spectrum. Roy G. Bivolo even became a comis classic villain for DC comics in the 80s. Once we learned ROYGBIV, we always remembered that red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet are the "order of the rainbow." Did your science teacher shine some light through a prism and show it to you? Did he tell you that each color had a different frequency if vibration. Please pardon me, once a science teacher, always a science teacher. Because of the behavior of some of the members of the Corinthian church, Paul seizes upon it to have a classic teaching moment...He is not going to just throw the word love out there and tell them that they ought to have it. It would be like saying that light is composed of seven colors without telling what, why and how they are...

Without his breakdown, love is just a word...And an over used word at that...Paul takes this opportunity to put some teeth into the word. Just as a science teacher showed us the breakdown of light, Paul breaks down love into it's component parts. He invites us in and throws down the gauntlet. He challenges us to see if our love meets the standards that he sets. We can't help but to read today's verses and examine ourselves. Pardon the pun, but each component opens up for us a world of reflection. Each time we read this passage, a believer is challenged to do some self-examination. We look into ourselves to see that the motives that guide our actions are actually what they ought to be. Love, for the Christian, IS the foundation for all of his words and deeds. It is the mind if Christ in us, wanting us to promote peace and goodwill. Lets really challenge ourselves...Read today's four verses a few times..Tomorrow we'll break down ROYGBIV into what it actually is...

Have a wonderful day..Let your LIGHT shine for Him.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
