Mary and Martha - Good Friends

"As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him" (Luke 10:38).

Don't worry, this isn't going to be one of those typical Martha and Mary lessons.. On July 11 here at Northfield, we are going to have a FRIEND DAY. We are asking our members to bring a friend(s) to our morning worship service. I will deliver a lesson about friendship and we will have a dinner after services. In the movie Tombstone, (1993) in reference to why he is helping Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday is asked; "Why you doin' this Doc?" He replies, "Because Wyatt Earp is my friend" The comeback is; "I've got lots of friends" To which Doc replies sincerely; "I don't" I now always think of those lines when I ponder friendship and how many friends that one really has. As I prepare the lesson for Friend Day, Mary and Martha are going to be among my examples. Luke does not tell us where Mary and Martha live, but John does. It is in Bethany,a town about 2 miles from Jerusalem. (John 11:1) I believe that friendship ought to be about sharing.

The first act of sharing that Martha did was inviting Jesus and the disciples into her home. It says that she lived with her sister Mary, who's friendship we will extol later. Our first act of friendship shown here is hospitality. Martha welcomed these people into her home. It must have been a large enough home, in that at least Jesus, Mary and the twelve disciples fit. It seems like it was a spontaneous act because Martha stayed busy making sure that everyone was comfortable and were being served. Friends do this. Mary on the other hand, was interested in what her guest Jesus had to say. Friends not only want to make their guests feel comfortable, but also want them to feel like they are important and wanted. Mary and Martha set the bar of hospitality here for us. They both played a part in doing what friends do. Paul said; "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn...Live in harmony with one another" (Rom. 12:15-16). We can only truly do this with people that we come to know through interaction, perhaps the interaction involved in our hospitality in sharing as friends. Friends share...

Have a wonderful day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil. 4:11
