A Sojourn


"Now the Lord had said to Abram: 'Get out of your country, from your family and your father's house, to a land that I will show you" (Genesis 12:1).

In today's world, traveling great distances is not a big deal. With modern highways, large ships and air travel, we can go almost anywhere on the planet in a relatively short amount of time. God's call to Abraham was to be a much different undertaking. To make even a brief sojourn into uncharted lands was a commitment on the part of Abraham, and we need to look at his foresight and courage. Packing up for the trip was more than changing the oil in the car and packing a few bags, or if the move was more permanent, calling a moving company. He had many possessions, notwithstanding 100s of camels, 1,000s of sheep goats and oxen. He had many servants with all they needed to function, with many tools, furniture and tents. This was not a move, it was a major project. Consider the the great faith that Abraham must have had in God to go off into the great unknown. God chose Abraham for a reason, and he proved himself worthy to be considered the father of a great race of people.

Jesus made us all sojourners in a sense when he said; "Go in to all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned" (Mark 16: 15-16). Just as Abraham was to be made into a representative of God, it is satisfying, and challenging to know that we are to fill that same role. Some Christians have taken the call in a very literal way in seeking to evangelize directly. Most of the others have chosen to take a secular job in the world and contribute to their church in it's missionary efforts, whether far away or close by. Our sojourn may not be an actual one, but can't we see the spiritual aspect of it? Paul states; "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be the glory in all the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever" (Eph. 3:20-21). It is so important for us a Christians with a conscience to focus on God's mission that he has placed squarely in our hands through Jesus Christ. Our lives are indeed sojourns, and we must let our God direct them.
