I Said In My Heart

"I said in my heart, 'Come now, I will test you with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure;' but surely, this also was vanity" (Ecc. 2:1).

Solomon, the supposed writer of the book of Ecclesiastes, had it all. If he lived today he certainly would have been in Fortune 500. As we begin this chapter with today's verse, it surely seems that he felt that because of all he had done and achieved, that he deserved the enjoyment of pleasure and rewards. For a period of time he did not deny himself anything. Maybe deep down inside of us we might think of what that would be like for just a short time. Hmmmm... There are terrible stories about people who have won the lottery and how it messed up their lives. A term that we might use to describe Solomon is that he became jaded. As we move forward in the chapter we find these words; "Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, for my heart rejoiced in all my labor; And this was my reward from all my labor" (V 10). So.... What is the reward from all of our labor? Is there a possibility that we think the same way that he did and that we just deserve all of this because we have worked so hard? In the very next verse Solomon answers his and our questions by saying; "Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done and on the labor in which I had toiled; and indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun."

As Solomon later compared wisdom and folly he concluded; "Then I saw that wisdom excelled folly as light excels darkness" (V 13). This teaching dovetails very well into those of Jesus when he says that; "one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions" (Luke 12:15). Our lives consist of what we are, rather than what we have. It is so sad indeed when see people who have so much to live with, and so little to live for..."The earth is the LORD'S, and everything in it, the world and all who live in it" (Ps. 24:1). If what we have and do does not get us back to God, all is vanity...

Have a great day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil. 4:11
