Announcements and RSVPs

"The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them" (Isa. 9:2).

Formal announcements about upcoming events are common things in our lives. We have been invited to weddings, graduations, birthday parties and other events. Often we are asked to respond to the announcement for obvious reasons. Isaiah was the great Messianic prophet. A lot of his writings emphasized the coming of Jesus and his kingdom. Although they were not formal announcements, they were announcements none-the-less. In the fourth chapter of Matthew, as Jesus begins His ministry, it is ushered in with these words; "This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet" (V14). Jesus is the light that Isaiah is talking about in today's verse. It's not all that Isaiah prophesied. "A virgin will be with child and bear a son" (7:14)....."For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace" (9:6) It is so cool to me that Isaiah puts an emphasis on both Jesus' humanity (child, son) and deity (Mighty God, Eternal Father).

Isaiah lists several titles that describe the Jesus we have come to know perfectly. We look at Him as our Counselor as we read His teachings. The idea of Mighty God, Eternal Father and Prince of Peace are also wonderfully accurate descriptions of our Savior. They describe His power (Mighty God), endurance (Eternal Father) and purpose (Prince of Peace). Isaiah also tells us more stuff that we have come to know. "There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace" (9:7). Here's what Jesus stated about His kingdom; "and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it" (Matt. 16:18). What a wonderful confidence of God's plans that we have as we read details about Jesus written some 700 years before His birth. Awesome! Jesus is the fulfillment of the announcements of Isaiah. Through our obedience, we RSVP....
