Companionship

"About eight days after Jesus said this, He took Peter, John and James with Him and went to a mountain to pray"

When Jesus started His ministry, replete with miracles, throngs of people followed Him. As I said previously, He handpicked twelve to be His disciples. One of them, John, is described several times as the disciple whom Jesus loved. On several momentous occasions, Jesus took with Him only three of the twelve. One of those events follows today's verse. This is commonly known as the transfiguration of Jesus and there was surely room for all twelve disciples on the mountain. Jesus chose to take only Peter, James and John. He also took these three when He raised Jairus' daughter from the dead (Luke 8) and went to pray at Gethsemane shortly before His arrest. (Matt. 26) The obvious question that one might ask is why were not all or others of the disciples chosen to be there? Could Jesus have possibly been closer to these men than the others? Was this really fair to the others?

Some forty four years ago I met a girl at college who was to become my wife. Both of us could have chosen other people to marry but we chose one another. It may be for the same reason that Jesus chose these three to be close to that we chose each other. We simply liked one another more than we liked other people. Even within a church family we may be closer to some people than we are to others. It is not that we love others less but that we are just closer to some than others. We don't need to feel guilty about this because even Jesus seems to have had three men that HE was closer to. Good companionship is so important in this world. Thinking back, Jane and I have never questioned our choice of each other to spend our lives with. We never felt that we deprived someone else of our close companionship. When it is put in that perspective, it almost seems silly that we cannot feel a greater companionship with some than others...Jesus did...

Have a great day....Let your light shine for Him... Love mark Phil. 4:11
