Mary - A Mom And a Christian

"They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus and with His brothers" (Acts 1:14).

This is the last appearance of Jesus' mother Mary in our Bibles. Many years have gone by since the angel Gabriel appeared to her. She was at the foot of the cross when her son was crucified. Like any mom, or even His disciples, she did not understand her son's mission. By the time she appears with all of the disciples early in the book of Acts, forty days after Jesus' resurrection, she probably understands the words of Simeon in the temple when her son was eight years old. "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that was spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too" (Luke 2:34-35). A sword had pierced her soul, but she had lived long enough to understand what the appearance of the angel had meant. She did not join with the disciples in Jerusalem that day alone, but had her other sons with her. Two of them, James and Jude became important men in the first century church and are generally given credit for writing two of the epistles.

Mary is usually looked at in regard to the birth of Jesus, but there is more to her than that. There is no doubt that she was a special enough woman to have been chosen by God to be Jesus' mother, but there is more to her than that...Even during Jesus' ministry, she probably did not completely understand who He was, but she did now. Her soul had been pierced. She has appeared along with her other sons at this special time, with Jesus' most trusted ones. Even if Jesus did not show Himself to her in His resurrected body, she knew that God had raised Him...Jesus was now more than her son...He was her Savior! And so He is to us..More than a baby in a manger...More than a carpenter....More than a teacher....He is our Savior....
