Baptism - 2 (+) 2

"When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, 'Brothers, what shall we do' " (Acts 2: 37)?

Like confession, baptism is an external event. Just as Jesus told us that if we confess Him before men, He will confess us before the Father, baptism is a public expression of one's faith and repentance. On the day we have come to know as the Day of Pentecost, Peter preached about Jesus to a large number of people. They were so touched that they asked the question that is today's verse. It is obvious that they really believed what Peter told them and wanted to respond in an appropriate manner. In the next two verses, Peter told them how. "He replied, 'Repent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.' " This is the 2 (+) 2 of today's title. Peter gave 2 commands and 2 promises. Repent and be baptized, and you will receive forgiveness of your sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the very next verse, that same promise is extended to future generations....Us! Paul later refers to those who respond as experiencing a newness of life and being a new creation. (Rom. 6:4 & 2 Cor. 5:17)

The obedient measures are so clear and simple, and the rewards are so great. Confession lets God and others know who's side we have taken. Repentance shows a shift in our loyalty and a change in our behavior. Coupled with baptism it offers us forgiveness and the Holy Spirit. Though math was never my best subject, I do understand 2 (+) 2....

I will miss writing to you for a while....Continue to let your light shine for Him as you go about doing good.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
