Being Alive

"And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sin" (Eph. 2:1).

When I was a really young boy, my best friend and I came upon a baby bird that had apparently just fallen from its nest. This featherless little creature was flapping it's tiny wings and contorting it's body violently. In my naivete, I thought that when the contortions stopped that it would be OK. Little did I know that the bird was in a death throe, and when the contortions stopped it was dead and there was nothing that I could do about it. Today's verse talks about a figurative coming back from the dead. Earlier in chapter one of the book of Ephesians, the apostle Paul writes about God's power in this way; "That power is like the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly kingdom" (Vs 19-20). Paul had a great relationship with the people of Ephesus. He had been with them for over two years, but still said that they had "been dead in their trespasses and sins." He couches their having been in sins to death, and it's forgiveness to coming back from the dead.

People's behavior is often motivated by the actions of those around them. Paul talked about it as "following the ways of the world" (V 2). In our daily lives we are inundated with worldly things. The advertisers always look to that edgy side of things to attract us to their products. I think that we sometimes forget how often people and the world actually influence us. The book of Romans tells us; "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of the world, but be transformed by the renewing of you mind" ( 12:2). Conformity to the world's standards takes us metaphorically to the death being spoken of and the transformation brings us back to life. Our standards of conduct ought to wrapped in being as Christ-like in our behavior as possible. There is an exhilaration in being alive....Being alive IN CHRIST!

Have a great week...Start it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil. 4:11
