True Worship

"Believe me woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain or in Jerusalem.....His worshippers must worship Him in spirit and in truth" (John 4: 21 & 24).

In John's gospel there are many conversations recorded that Jesus had with individuals. In this section, He is conversing with a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well near Sychar. The conversation included: the distinction between Jews and Samaritans, living water, observations on marriage. It finally got around to the topic of worship when she perceived that He was a prophet. She said; "Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem" (V 22). Jesus was starting to get the heart of the matter about true worship as he told her; "You worship what you do not know" (V 22). God does not want ignorant worship. Knowledge is a basic criteria of worship. The prophet Hosea was right on target when he uttered these famous words..."My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" (4:6). Jesus made a connection between knowledge, worship and salvation.

Jesus set a new standard for true worship. Worshipping would no longer be the exercise of a series of rituals or ceremonies. The standard would now be much more significant...It would be much more meaningful. When Jesus said that His worshippers would worship Him in spirit and in truth, God became the real focus or centerpiece of worship. If worship was to be real and true, then the only object must be God. Worship was to be broken down into two simple components....SPIRIT and TRUTH! This certainly eliminates things and nature. It also eliminates the concern about where, who and how. God is simply seeking worship from true worshippers. Those in spirit and truth. The spirit denotes the proper attitude and truth the correct practice. Finally, without the heart as a part or our worship, we are tragically far from God. Our hearts must seek Him in spirit and truth...

Have a wonderful day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil. 4:11
