How We Are Blessed

"Blessed is the man......." (Psalm 1:1).

Throughout the Psalms and Proverbs we find out why men are blessed. The term is often interchangeable with the word happy. The first Psalm indicates that man is blessed if he does not get involved with the wicked or scornful, but rather meditates on the law "day and night." As Jesus introduces the Sermon on the Mount with what we call the Beatitudes of the Kingdom, the term blessed is used nine times. It means more than just happy though...Blessed used here refers to an ultimate joy. A distinctive and supreme well-being reserved for those who share in the salvation of the kingdom of God.

Those who are poor in spirit will be blessed in that theirs is the kingdom of God. This blessedness includes having God rule in their lives. Those that mourn get the blessing of comfort. As one mourns over their own spiritual poverty and the needs of others, they will be comforted now and in the future. Those that are meek will receive a great inheritance. They will inherit the earth, in one sense now and in the future sense of that new heaven and earth. For those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, a filling will be achieved. They will be filled with the righteousness that they seek made possible through their faith and the blood of Jesus. For those who practice mercy, mercy will be given rather than justice. A mercy made possible only through our Savior, Jesus Christ. A promise is made to the pure in heart that they will see God. They will see Him presently in the face of Jesus and in the future as we will see Him face to face. The peacemakers will also be honored as they are called sons of God. In being a peacemaker, we reflect the character of Jesus and are thusly blessed. Finally, there is the blessing for those who are persecuted because of righteousness. As with the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Persecution and hardship often provides us with a chance to show that we are fit for His kingdom....What a wonderful set of passages for us to ponder and meditate. They show how we are blessed....
