Handling Prosperity

"You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me" (Luke 18: 22).

God does not ask any of us to take a vow of poverty. According to the "prosperity preachers" who come on TV late at night, he even wants us to have our debts canceled and receive great gifts from God by pledging amounts of money to them...I'm still working on that one!!!! Today's verse is about a man that the Bible calls The rich young ruler. The young man came to Jesus asking how to gain eternal life. Jesus, knowing his heart, leads him though his adherence to the law. The young man seems to be satisfied, in that he has observed the law. Then our Lord hits him with today's verse. "When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth" (V 23). Using some devastating hyperbole, Jesus says "Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" (V 24).

I would like to think that the word easier is key here.

Though it is not always the case, material prosperity has a way of turning people from God. Through the ages, one thing that God's people seem to be unable to endure is unrelenting prosperity. When the children of Israel were weak and helpless in Egypt, it was then that they found God to be their strength and hope. When a vessel is empty, there is now room for God. Full ones seem to forget how they got that way. At their lowest point in Egypt, the people were willing to stand aside and watch as God went to work. I think that the lesson is clear. God's glory is always most evident when people put their complete trust in Him. As God was faithful to the Israelites then, He will be to us today if we put our trust in Him. Prosperity can be handled as long as we know what it for and where it came from...

Have a wonderful day...Make a difference as you let His light shine in you... Love mark Phil. 4:11
