Being The Non-Conformist

"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom. 12:2).

There are terms that come to mind when I think of non-conformity...How about; "he moves to the beat of his own drummer" or "Its my way or the highway." In many ways the non-conformist sticks out to us. He or she does things counter to the way many people do them. In all honesty, the world of sales runs on conformity. That is why companies use famous, well-liked people in their commercials. They think that we want to be like them. It is why the sellers of exercise devices use chiseled and lean people to shill for their products...We want to look like them. So what is this "conformity" thing that the apostle Paul is writing about in today's verse. Who's right here, Paul or the advertisers? Doing what others do in imitating how they talk dress or act can be a dangerous thing. I think that Paul is telling us that the conformist is afraid to be different, so feels the need to act like everyone else. Maybe it is the assumption that just because many people act a certain way that it must be the right way. The majority rules! Jesus knew that this was not true when he said these words: "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow is the road that leads to life, and only a few find it" (Matt. 7: 13-14).

It seems to me that Jesus and Paul are teaching the same message. Conformity to this world will often lead us to do things that we know are wrong. We cannot expect to wallow around with the pigs, and come out smelling like the rose. "Do not be misled; bad company corrupts good character" (1 Cor. 15: 33). By giving way to the lust of the flesh (immorality), we conform to the world. By succumbing to the lust of the eyes (materialism), we conform to the world. By yielding to the pride of life (arrogance), we conform to the world. As we make every effort to be pliant to God's will and not that of the world, we are on the road to non-conformity.

Have a wonderful day... Make a difference.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
