Nice Duds

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience" (Col. 3: 13).

I guess that I often date myself, but do you remember when clothing were called duds? If someone were dressed particularly well, we might say, "Cool duds"...There is an old saying that goes, "clothing makes the man." Mark Twain had a little fun with this saying when he said; "Clothing makes the man. Naked people have little influence on society." As Christians, we are in strive mode. We are striving to be Christ-like in our lives. Today's verse gives us five wonderful attributes of Christ that we ought to strive to attain. In the next two verses, three more virtues, forebearance, forgiveness and love are mentioned. The apostle wraps all of these qualities into a very neat package and says that we are to clothe ourselves with them. The implication here is quite clear. If we have these qualities within us, they will show outwardly as clothing do on a person. We will be literally adorned with them.

The characteristics are not new to us, but it would be good for us to look them over. After doing that, we can reinforce their value to us by meditating on them. Lets give a quick look at these clothes...First is compassion. Jesus felt compassion, a kindness or benevolence, on those people that he healed. Closely related is kindness, that quality of gentleness that touches us and spurs us on to good deeds. Humility come next and it deals with a modesty that manifests itself in not always wanting to take credit for things. Pieces of our clothing touch each other, so these articles are similar. Meekness is a special type of gentleness and mildness that is important to wear. Patience and forbearance are the next articles and we should wear them with an attitude of endurance and slowness to anger. The final two pieces are a forgiving attitude, and the crowning touch of love. This is the spiritual apparel with which we are to adorn ourselves in our lives in Christ. Tomorrow we will "accessorize."

Have a wonderful day... Make a difference... Love mark Phil. 4:11
