Getting Smarter Yet

"For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 1:9).

You have probably figured out that my theme this week has been about knowledge. It is a wonderfully special knowledge that helps us to be more Christ-like. Since we all want to live effective and productive lives, the apostle Peter gives us some sound advice in today's verse. The eight Christ-like qualities are listed in verses 5 to 7. Just to refresh our memory; "make every effort to add to your faith, goodness; and to your goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness and to godliness, brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness, love". Peter says that it is through these virtues that we will become more like Christ and thus be more effective and productive citizens in his kingdom. There is more good news about getting smarter. It says; "if you do these things, you will never fall" (V 10)..(KJV and ASV say stumble).... Not stumbling does not mean that we won't sin, but that through God's grace we can be forgiven and still maintain our ultimate goal.

But there's even more! It goes on to tell us; "and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" ( V 11). Growing in the knowledge of Christ is our assurance of salvation and a rich welcome into His eternal kingdom. This sounds so good that we may be afraid that it falls into the "too good to be true category." There is a slight catch, but a worthwhile one. Notice that Peter tells us that these qualities must grow and feed off of one another. It is not a pick and choose our favorite virtue thing. We must aspire to grow in all of these qualities, and by possessing them live a more effective and productive life here and later. I'm beginning to feel smarter already....How about you?

Have a great day... Go about doing good. Love mark Phil. 4:11
