Why Church?

"When he had finished washing their feet, He put on his clothes and returned to His place. 'Do you understand what I have done for you?'........I have set you an example that you should do as I have done" (John 13: 12 & 15).

Why give up a whole weekend morning and perhaps a mid week evening when no other responsibility is pressing upon us? Just why does going to church make sense? Since I was old enough to remember, I was sitting in a church pew on Sunday morning. In those early years, I for sure knew the reason...My mom took me! Mom is gone but my Sundays are still spent at the church building. As an adult, it is my now my own decision. But why? Putting it as simply as possible, church makes sense to me. Let me share a few reasons with you and see if you agree. Any person who has attempted to study the teachings of Jesus ought to come away with this. Jesus, who established the church, was a servant. Today's verses are a poignant teaching moment by our Lord. After sharing a meal together, Jesus preceded to strip to the waist and wash the feet of all the disciples. Peter said, "you shall never wash my feet," to which Jesus replied; "Unless I wash you, you will have no part with me" (Vs 8-9). When Jesus had finished washing their feet he said, "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done." The washing of feet is a symbol of service to others. Jesus whole life and death was about serving. Over and over again in the early Christian church people used their resources to help those less fortunate than themselves.

In today's world we are blessed with many opportunities to help and serve others. The problem actually lies in their great number and our limited resources. Just where do we put our time and money? The church provides a unique way to pool our resources as a way to meet needs. Such an enormous amount of good has been done in the world today because churches. Hospices, homeless shelters, food banks, and on and on are often funded and staffed by churches. Individually I may have no way to address all of these needs, but working together with other church members, things can get done. Moreover, the integrity with which a local church can deal with local needs is high...Some more about why church tomorrow...

Have a great beginning to your week....Start with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil. 4:11
