The Best Gifts

"The moon belongs to everyone---The best things in life are free.
The stars belong to everyone---The gleam there for you and me.
The flowers in spring, the robins that sing, the sunbeams that shine, they're your they're mine.
And love belongs to everyone---The best things in life are free.
"

Words and music Unknown...Performed by Dinah Shore/Frank Sinatra 1948

Christmas is long past, but I am sure we can go back into our youth to think about some presents that we received that were memorable. When I was 7 or 8 I got a toy rifle from my sister. You put a cork in the end of of it and it shot out a few feet. I don't remember playing with anything else for quite some time. While you're thinking, are there any gifts that you gave that someone else thought were special? Last night in our Bible class on parables, we studied about the Friend at Midnight (Luke 11) and the Persistent Widow. (Luke 18) While I listened, gifts from God kept coming to mind, hence today's ditty instead of a scripture. If I had written a verse, it would have been; "Every good and perfect gift is from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17). At the end of the parable of the Friend at Midnight, Jesus says; "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg will give him a scorpion?" (Vs 11-12) The best gifts have always come from the Lord! To keep getting, the two parables say that we must keep asking. It is kind of like that youthful wish-list at Christmas time of the things we would like to get. The big difference lies in the knowledge that the Lord knows what we want and need. "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" (V 13)

The gifts of God are many..."He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created" (James 1: 18). Some of God's gifts are: the Holy Spirit...His grace.....eternal life...an inspired book. I am sure this morning, that if you thought for a while you could list others. The catch? We must keep on asking, seeking and knocking to keep getting. As my mom would have said; "What a bargain."

Have a great day... Make a difference.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
