Worhip In Spirit

"God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24).

Today's verse is one that most of us have heard often. It culminates Jesus' talk with a Samaritan woman by Jacob's well. If you remember the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jews and Samaritans didn't associate with one another. Their discussion in the fourth chapter of the gospel of John is worth some time in reading and meditation. The discussion led to where worship was to take place. She said; "Our father's worshipped on this mountain, (Gerizim) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem" (V 20). Jesus' response is a telling one; "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem" (V 21). Next Jesus utters today's verse and confirms to her that He is the Messiah. So what does this "worship in spirit" thing mean. True worship of God ought to be induced by emotions of the heart. There is a difference, however, between emotions and emotionalism. Emotionalism is an appeal to the emotions. Worship is homage rendered to God. It is devoted to honoring God, but not simply on an emotional level. Let me throw in a disclaimer here. Our emotions should not be eliminated during worship. There are things about worship that ought to be emotionally stirring to us. I believe, correct me if I am off base, that we must worship with the right emotion and attitude.

Those emotions include love, sincerity, thanksgiving, reverence and humility. When we worship with the proper emotions it will probably have an effect on others at worship. The assembly will then be recognized as a worship service rather than a committee meeting...That being said, true worship is not just for the purpose of arousing some sort of emotions in those present. It is still what it is......A service dedicated to the honor and glory of our God, through His Son. More about the spiritual side of worship tomorrow...

Have a wonderful day...Spend some time in meditation to the Lord.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
