Truth and Spirit in Worship

"Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Eph. 5: 19-20).

When Jesus proclaimed that we must worship in spirit and in truth, just what did He mean? The acts of worship as I see them are prayer, spiritual songs, the Lord's Supper, (communion) giving of our material goods and a study of God's Word. (preaching the gospel) When we worship the Lord on His day, all of these aspects ought to be included...So....Which of these ought to be done "in spirit and in truth?" I am maintaining that all of the parts of our worship ought to be done this way. We ought to put our whole hearts into our singing. Even though the songs were written by people, they are designed for us to give praise to our Lord. We do not have to sing well to be good singers, but we must sing with our hearts.(spiritually) Our prayers are to be directed to the Father (Luke 11:2) and in Christ's name. (Eph. 5:20) We are to pray with thanksgiving in our hearts and with understanding. Our prayers are to include the needs of others. All of these things will give glory to God. The Lord's Supper is to be observed each Lord's Day as a part of our worship. (Acts 20:7) As it commemorates Jesus' sacrifice for us, it should be observed with solemnity and awe...Spiritually from the heart.

Though the giving part seems to be physical, the spiritual aspect of it is overwhelming. The story of the widow giving two mites in Mark 13 comes to mind. We are to give on the first day as we have been prospered. (1 Cor. 16:2) Finally, there's that sermon. The preacher has a responsibility to preach the truth of God's Word. If the truth is not proclaimed, God is not glorified. The truth ought to be proclaimed in love and received with meekness. (Jas. 1:21) When the truth is proclaimed in love and received with the right attitude, we can most assuredly know that the Lord is pleased. When we worship in spirit and in truth we show that we love our God enough to worship Him with the right emotion, motivation and guide. God has always deserved our best and its up to us to give it.

Have a wonderful day... Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
