Living By The Spirit

"Do not get drunk on wine which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit" (Gal. 5:18).

This is not going to be a writing about temperance. The apostle Paul is trying to make an important point here. I think that the contrast between being filled with wine and with the Spirit is an obvious one. There is a common thread that enables Paul to make the contrast, namely, that people can be under some influence that affects them..... Whether it is wine, the Spirit or something else. We have all heard the term "DUI." As Christians, we ought to be "LUI." Living under the influence! Living under the influence of the Spirit! Again we can turn to the life of Jesus to see that he was filled with the Spirit, thus ruled by it. "When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as He was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on Him" (Lk. 3:21) The Holy Spirit led Him into the desert where He was tempted by Satan and it allowed Him to resist. Jesus taught that this Spirit was God's seal of approval. Throughout His life, ministry and death, the Holy Spirit testifies about Jesus.

The Holy Spirit is the fruit (Gal. 5:22-23) of Jesus' work in us. Just as Jesus was led by the Spirit, we can be led by it too. The Holy Spirit leads us away from self-dependency to dependence on God. Living by the Spirit allows us to face our temptations and defeat them. Living by the Spirit constrains us to admit an our shortcomings (sins) and ask forgiveness. Living by the Spirit gives us the true joy that can only be had with the knowledge of Christ...Lets all be LUIs.....Living under the influence of the Spirit...

Have a great day....Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
