Power Beyond Ourselves

"If you want to get warm, you stand near the fire. If you want to get wet, you must get into the water. If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into the thing that has them. They are not a sort of prize, which God could, if He chose, just hand out to everyone. They are a fountain of great energy and beauty spurting up at the very center of reality."

C. S. Lewis.....Mere Christianity

This C. S. Lewis is the same man who created Narnia. Born in 1898, he was an atheist for a while before coming to the Lord. Mere Christianity was written as a compilation of radio lectures the he made during WW II. I believe that he is referring to being filled with the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul writes this to us; "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to dissipation.(debauchery) Instead be filled with the Holy Spirit" (Eph. 5:18). I am not in any way a scholar of the Greek language that our New Testament were written in, but I understand the verb tense used here to be the present. It it used to indicate that it is a continuous filling rather than one dramatic moment. Repeatedly, as the occasion requires, the Spirit will give us the power for proper worship, service and witness. As used here, it is not just a recommendation but an imperative....A command! It also indicates that it is not just available to only one person, but rather to all. Lastly, within this context, it is not something that comes as an initiative from man but from a higher power. When he speaks here of being filled with the Spirit, it means that we are under His control. This control has an exhilarating effect on us, especially as we look at the next three verses. Those three verses tell us what happens when we receive this power beyond ourselves...It constrains us to have a happy and mutual encouragement to praise God....A happy and healthy mutual relationship with others. "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" (Vs 19-21). These are quite simply some amazing verses that convey what is available to all who are willing to submit to our Lord. There is a power out there that we can all have. It is a POWER BEYOND OURSELVES....

Have a great day...He will give us the Power to do good.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
