Defense! Defense! Defense!

"Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life" (Prov.4: 23).

In most major team sports, defense is just as important as offense. We usually think of the winner as having scored more points, runs, goals or touchdowns. But if we stop to think for a moment, the team that keeps the other from scoring, wins. Its all about being good "guards." The writer of this proverb reminds us that the quality of our lives is dependent upon how well we guard our heart. The world is full of things that will attempt to pull us away from the Lord. It will do this by trying to penetrate our defenses and our ability to guard our heart. The apostle Peter writes this: "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour" (1 Pet. 5: 8). Satan has all kinds of weapons with which to prey upon any weakness, and will probe to find them. Anything from career pressures to sexual temptations.....He may try to confuse and distract us and get us to think that we are powerful enough on our own and don't need God. He will even use our comfort zones and refusal to change to bring down our guards. Peter has his own version of today's proverb in the next verse. "Resist him, standing firm in your faith" (V 9).

Our strong faith and increasing knowledge will allow us to put up a sturdier defense. When we have the power that is within us to guard our heart, we can then go on with our lives...We can then go on offense...The game is always more fun when we are doing most of the scoring...

Have a wonderful day.... Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil. 4:11
