A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood

"It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?...."

Fred M. Rodgers 1967

If you are a young person, you probably sang this song with Mr. Rodgers. If you are a little older, you may have sung it with your kids as Mr. Rodgers came on PBS. Do you know any more of the words? "I've always wanted to have a neighbor like you...I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you." Gentle Mr. Rodgers made children feel comfortable as they came into his neighborhood.... In response to the a question about what must be done to inherit eternal life, Jesus said: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind...and...., Love your neighbor as yourself" (Luke 10:27). The next question asked Jesus to identify one's neighbor. As the perfect answer to this question, Jesus taught him and us through the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The priest and the Levite were in their own neighborhood, but did not help the man who had been robbed and badly beaten. On the other hand, the Samaritan who was not in his geographical neighborhood, treated the man as if he were really his neighbor. A noted theologian, Frederick Buechner, said this: "Compassion is the sometimes fatal capacity for feeling what it's like to live inside someone else's skin. It is the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too." What I am trying to say today is that there should be compassion in the neighborhood. In the 1980s, AT&T came up with the slogan regarding the use of their communications system that stated, "reach out and touch someone." Compassion constrains us to do just that. Is there compassion in your neighborhood? Maybe we ought to sing more of Mr. Rodgers' song...."Please won't you be my neighbor?"

Have a wonderful day....RAKs are for neighbors..... Love mark Phil. 4:11
