The Vertical And Horizontal

"All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments" (Matt. 22: 40).

In my years of teaching science, I did many lab activities with my students. For me the thrill was seeing my students follow certain procedures and get the desired result. Now I knew the result in advance, but they did not. The only way for the activity to work correctly was for them to do everything in the correct order. Science is supposed to be a discipline of order. Today's verse might seem a bit strange to you. I guess that it is a bit of a tease in that I did not state the commandnests...The two commandments that Jesus is talking about are probably very familiar to you..."Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment" (Vs 37-38). Now Jesus could have stopped here and He would have answered the question that was posed to Him as to which was the greatest commandment in the Law. But Jesus did here what God did when He gave the people the Ten Commandments...He connected the vertical with the horizontal. In that God made us as individuals, He wants us to establish a vertical relationship....A relationship with Him. The first four commandments are just that....Vertical...Back to Jesus.... "The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself" (V 39). The vertical and horizontal are intricately and exquisitely interrelated. The last six of the Ten Commandments deal with our relationships with other people...Horizontal...God always connects the vertical with the horizontal. We just have to follow the procedures to get the desired result.

Have wonderful day...Let your light shine for HIM... Love mark Phil. 4:11
