Paying The Price

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Rom. 6:23).

My mom was the biggest bargain hunter that I have ever known. I guess that having lived in poverty as a small child and through the Great Depression as an adult had something to do with it. When she shopped, getting something for less was always a key issue. Getting something for free was the Holy Grail. Today's verse tells us that salvation is a gift. It is a gift from God through Jesus Christ. The terms "gift" and "free" are a bargain hunter's delight. With deference to bargain hunters everywhere, here is where the road diverges. Just because salvation is gift, does not mean that it is without cost. This gift must be accepted on the conditions set forth by God. Salvation may be free, but it is not cheap. So....Just what is the price? "If anyone will come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Lk. 9:23). As Jesus sets the conditions for salvation, He calls us to pay the price of an unqualified love. He calls us to love Him supremely. He says that we are to love Him even more than we love ourselves. Without reservation or shame, we are to put Him first. This unqualified love must reflect in our relationships with our friends and even our families. Jesus calls us to love Him more than any earthly possession(s). "And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple" (Lk. 14:27). Does all of this sound like a lot for something that's supposed to be free? I know what my mom would have said..."What a bargain!"

Have a great day...In our small part of the world, lets make a difference... Love mark Phil.4:11
